Les Miller founded the BMBL in 1975. A basketball junky, he decided to provide a place for competitive basketball in Burlington, Ontario. Les, a Burlington native, is a member of the McMaster Hall of fame where his legacy includes playing an integral part in providing McMaster with state-of-the-art athletics and recreation facilities. He was instrumental in the planning and construction of The Pulse Fitness Centre, Alumni Field, and more recently, Ron Joyce Stadium and the David Braley Athletic Centre. He led multiple major renovation projects in the Ivor Wynne Centre, including the Burridge Gymnasium bleachers, Rose Hill Dance Studio and tripling the size of the sports medicine clinic.
Miller was also involved in various international sporting events, including McMaster hosting women’s soccer as part of the 1993 FISU Games, 1994 International Children’s Games, 1994 FIBA World Championship, 1996 Atlanta Summer Olympics and the 2010 Commonwealth Games Bid put forward by the City of Hamilton.
Sadly, after a 6-year battle with brain cancer, on July 6, 2013, Les passed away.
Les' Legacy
After his passing, Les' son Brandon carried on the BMBL tradition 15 years Now. As a boy, Brandon was the scorekeeper at every BMBL game (at Nelson High School). Now, in 2024, Brandon along with Les' grandchildren Cade and Nash (who are the league scorekeepers), has continued to share the memory of Les' smile and love for basketball, while keeping the tradition alive at Nelson High School.
The BMBL is a league built on the 'Miller families' love and legacy for Les. Each year, the Les Miller Championship trophy is hoisted in honour of Les and his family.
Edit: It was important for Brandon Miller to point out that he is a 7-time champion of the league.
